Summer Homework Q & A
I've gotten a lot of great work from your class already with a multitude of questions. I wanted to make sure that as questions arise all students have access to the answers in a format that they can understand.
Q: Can we do that quizzes on NEWSLA? / How do we prove our work? / Do I have to get 100%
A: Yes, you may. Keep in mind that as you do the quizzes you are reducing your writing practice. Although yes this is acceptable and seemingly less work, you are now not getting as much writing practice. Decide and assess yourself, do I need more reading practice or more writing practice. I recommend sending me a screenshot of your results. You can copy and paste this into your Google Doc in place of the writing. On a mac - command+shift+3, on a PC - I forget. Google it, there's a way. Lastly, for this class in particular, and your development as adult learners cut out the points and minimum mind set. Do you ever HAVE to get 100%? No. Is an 81 failing? No. Is your first C every failing? No. You're going to struggle in this class. Get over that now. Do your best to get 100%, if you don't - I see it as a choice, and laziness. Try and try and try some more - however no. I'm not giving you a standard. Decide what your goal is - 100%, 60% of the time... may be it's 85% 100% of the time. Whatever...
Q: I'm trying to listen to music and, so, uh, where are these questions you speak of? The links are dead?
A: OOPS. I think some of the links are dead, and some of the worksheets we have to pay for. If you can find a worksheet to go with any music - boom. Go for it. I would love to see it and maybe use it in another class. Zachary Jones and Clozeline are two key words to google with regards to musical comprehension activities. Alternative assignment... Create a Clozeline activity like I did for you guys for Si yo fuera un chico - Beyonce or Tirame agua. Lastly, just write about it. Listen and write. Solid.
Q: My other class is giving me an assignment to read and there is a Spanish version. Can I read the Spanish version for our class and write about it?
A: Virtual fist bump. Too cheesy? I love the cross curricular anything (double dipping). However, see question 1, if you decide to read some of that assignment in English, for your Spanish homework, you are shorting yourself. I won't know (most likely). You won't get the practice. Your success is in your hands.
Q: Maestraaaaa, a movie is super long compared to a song, can I watch parts of the movie throughout the summer for my assignment instead of one per listening assignment?
A: Sure. Fair statement. You may break up a movie and shorten your assignment HOWEVER - see question 1 and 3. The more you listen the better you get at it. Should the points and the length and the minimum be your focus within your education? NO. Your growth is your goal. Do you check out after a half our of Spanish? Probably. Increments is probably a good idea, or watching / listening multiple times. Teachers in my circle of networking persons, have often said exactly this or something similar: "My student was sick for a week and came back speaking like a native speaker, and they were the one I didn't think was going to pass the AP test. She watched 6 hours of telenovelas each day she was gone. Who knew!" Just listening in the target language works wonders.
